What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

By Vicky Lalwani · Updated 2026-10-28

Short answer: Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your brand appear, and be cited as a source, in answers generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini. It combines answer-first content, structured data, consistent entity information and mentions on the third-party sources those systems trust.

Why GEO matters now

For two decades, “being found” meant ranking in ten blue links. Today a growing share of questions are answered directly by AI, at the top of Google, inside ChatGPT, or in Perplexity, and the user often never clicks. If your brand isn't named in that answer, you've lost the moment of consideration, even if you still rank on page one.

The upside: AI answers usually cite a handful of sources and name a short list of brands. Getting onto that list is a concentrated, winnable opportunity.

GEO vs SEO vs AEO

  • SEO earns rankings in traditional search results.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization) structures content so it can be lifted as a direct answer: featured snippets, voice and AI.
  • GEO focuses on being mentioned, cited and recommended inside generated answers across multiple AI engines.

In practice you do all three at once: the same page should rank, answer and be quotable.

How AI engines choose what to cite

Each engine works differently, but the patterns are consistent. They favour pages that are accessible to their crawlers, that state facts clearly near the top, that are corroborated by other sources, and that come from entities with a consistent identity across the web. Reviews, comparison lists, forums such as Reddit, and reputable publications carry a lot of weight.

My GEO checklist

  1. Let the bots in. Check robots.txt allows Googlebot, Bingbot, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, and that key content renders without heavy JavaScript.
  2. Lead with the answer. Open each important page with a two- or three-sentence answer to the question it targets, then expand.
  3. Use schema. Organization or Person, Service, Product, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList markup help engines understand who you are and what you offer.
  4. Make your entity consistent. Same name, description, location and facts on your site, LinkedIn, directories and profiles.
  5. Publish citable facts. Original numbers, clear definitions and comparisons are what models quote.
  6. Earn third-party mentions. Get onto the “best of” lists, review sites, community threads and publications that AI engines already cite in your category.
  7. Localise. AI answers differ by country. Build separate prompt sets for Australia, the UK and the US if you sell into all three.
  8. Track monthly. Run the same prompts every month and record mentions, citations and share of voice.

How long does GEO take?

Technical and structural fixes can appear in AI answers within weeks of recrawling. Authority and citations compound over three to six months, similar to SEO, but with a sharper payoff because answers name so few brands.

If you'd like to see where your brand stands today, I run GEO audits across all the major AI engines.

FAQ

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO is built on top of SEO. AI engines still depend on crawlable, well-structured, authoritative pages. GEO adds answer-first structure, entity consistency and third-party citations.

How do you measure GEO?

Track a fixed set of buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews each month, and record whether your brand is mentioned, cited or recommended versus competitors.
